Open Question: What's a good length surfboard for beginners?

I've always wanted to get into surfing, and I do intend to take lessons (I live maybe 15 minutes to half an hour, depending on traffic from Corona Del Mar, CA), as well as a friend who offered some help. However, she's often very busy. I was wondering beforehand; what kind of size (length, etc...) on average is recommended for beginning surfers? I just want to get an idea of what is usually recommended before I go in, so I have a modest idea of what kind of board I'd probably be looking at.
